Welcome to the Spokane
Yacht Club {SYC} web site. The primary purpose of this site is to
communicate to our members about the upcoming activities, events and
meetings. It is also a place to share the memories and photo's!
Secondly, a new way to introduce our friends and prospective members
to all the fun we have to offer! Above all an exciting way to share
the fun! Enjoy!
The purpose of the
Spokane Yacht Club is to serve the interests of boat owners and
enthusiasts. To protect such persons against adverse
legislation and taxation. To prevent the pollution of area
waters and camping facilities. To stimulate a greater interest in
boating among all the citizens in the area served by the club. To
provide a medium for the exchange of boating information. To own or
lease property for club uses. To develop more adequate boat storage
and dock facilities. And to do all other things which will tend to
service owners and operators of boating equipment and to further
interest of boating generally.
The Spokane Outboard
club was formed in 1954 with 38 charter members, and incorporated in
1954. By mandate of membership, in 1967 the name was changed to The Spokane
Yacht Club. In 1961 SYC
purchased 7 acres of land with 450 feet of beach on the Spokane
River in Couer d'Alene, Idaho. A short time after an extensive
property development program began. Most members donated many hours
to build a road, launch ramp, docks, restrooms, clubhouse, electric
service and many other improvements. In recent years kitchen and
other improvements have been made to the clubhouse. Although a
fulltime caretaker lives on the grounds, the property chairman, with
the help of a committee, requires the assistance of all members in
the annual upkeep and major projects. SYC owns and operates the
property for the enjoyment of members and guests.
SYC is a club featuring
activities of interest to boaters throughout the year. Social
activities begin with the Commodores Ball in January, which includes
the installation of the new Board. There is also a spring and Fall
Dance.
A cruise schedule is
organized each year which includes a spring Shakedown
Cruise, Annual Kid's Day at our property, camp outs, cruises
with other boating clubs as well as many other fun cruises. Also an
annual BBQ is arranged by the Vice Commodore in conjunction with the
initiation of new members. Historically, the local Blue Gavel is invited to plan
and carry out the initiation.
